Curriculum

At Phoenix House we want all children to become absorbed in and passionate about their studies. Finding subject areas they love while challenging themselves in others will be part of everyday school life. We are excited to bring learning to life and ensure all children build strong foundations of knowledge and skills for a lifetime of learning.

Our curriculum will be based on the National Curriculum of England, employing the best of this well structured curriculum and enhancing it to match our context here in Japan and Asia.

All children will study:

  • English

  • Maths

  • Science

  • Geography

  • History

  • Japanese

  • Music and Drama

  • Art and Design

  • PE

  • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education)

  • Computing

While children will experience formal maths and English teaching, our studies will be organised thematically, with several subjects combined into a class theme to enable and encourage curiosity, enquiry and collaboration.

Teaching by subject specialists in music, art and PE, alongside text-rich time in the library with class teachers and our librarian will be part of every week at Phoenix House.

We are committed to high quality Japanese language learning; all students will study Japanese daily, with a focus on:

  • Speaking and listening fluency

  • Reading and writing skills - grammar and vocabulary

  • Literature appreciation

  • Confidence

After school clubs and language programmes will also be available for those seeking the study of other languages.

Tokyo and our outdoor centre North Peak in Hokkaido offer innumerable opportunities for hands on, authentic learning experiences. Making the most of everything this wonderful country has to offer to enrich will bring the children’s learning experiences to life.

Whole Child

Whilst academic study and excellent academic outcomes are paramount to ensuring successful school life, we believe providing authentic opportunities for children to build their self confidence and character are of equal importance. Through being a member of Rothesay, Oak or Clarence House, children will be actively engaged in team and mixed age group settings throughout the year.

Choirs, orchestras, ensembles and year group instrumental programs, along with dance, drama and public speaking will form the backbone of our performing arts programme. Artistic freedoms with drawing, painting, printing, sculpting and textiles will inspire our creative arts. While physical strength and sporting prowess will prevail across our PE curriculum.

We want everyone at Phoenix House to explore their interests, develop their personality, and face their fears all while supported and championed by their friends and colleagues. Our learning community will be built upon kindness, good manners and consideration of others. We will all be learners together.
